How Many Poles Do You Need?
- 2-pole: single-phase homes. Switches phase and neutral together, which is the safest choice for most houses.
- 3-pole: three-phase loads without switched neutral, such as some motors and industrial machines.
- 4-pole: three-phase homes, shops and buildings where the neutral should also transfer with the phases.

Choosing the Right Amp Rating
Your changeover must carry the maximum current of everything connected to it:
- List the appliances that will run on the backup source at the same time.
- Add their wattage and divide by 230 for single phase to get amps.
- Add at least 25% margin for motor starting (ACs, pumps, fridges).
- Make sure the changeover rating is at least equal to the main breaker that feeds it.

- small house with fans, lights and a fridge: 32A–50A,
- house with one or two ACs and a water pump: 63A–75A,
- large house, shop or small commercial load: 100A–125A.
