How to Check if an Electrical Product Is Original

Fake breakers, RCCBs and surge protectors look almost the same as the real thing, but they may not trip when they should. Use these six checks before you install any protection device.

6 checks before you install

These checks work for MCBs, MCCBs, RCCBs, RCBOs, SPDs, contactors and changeover switches from any brand.

1

Buy from a known seller

Fakes usually enter through unknown resellers and "too cheap" offers. Buy from a shop that gives a proper invoice and can be contacted after the sale.

2

Check the packaging

Genuine boxes have sharp printing, correct spelling, the brand logo, model number and ratings. Blurry print, spelling mistakes or a plain box are warning signs.

3

Read the rating label

The device itself should show the model, rated current (A), voltage (V), breaking capacity (e.g. 6kA / 10kA) and the standard it follows (such as IEC 60898 or IEC 60947). Labels should be printed or laser-marked, not stickers that peel off.

4

Feel the weight and finish

Original breakers and contactors use solid copper parts and feel heavier. Very light units, rough plastic edges or loose screws often mean poor-quality internals.

5

Check the terminals

Terminal screws should tighten firmly and clamp the cable evenly. Thin or soft terminals can heat up under load.

6

Test after installation

Ask your electrician to test it: an RCCB/RCBO should trip on its TEST button, and a breaker should switch firmly with a clear ON/OFF position.

Important: these checks reduce risk but are not a lab test. If a product looks doubtful, do not install it. Send us clear photos of the box and label and we will help you check it.
